Fine art photography in a studio

Continuing with the series of European paintings reproductions in the studio, this time I choose an action painting that is as beautiful as it is violent.

I found it quite unusual that the woman decided to kill the general in such a brutal and lethal way. Read more about this biblical story of seduction and betrayal. Enjoy, comment, and share. Thanks.

Artemisia Gentileschi

Giaele e Sisara  1620

Oil on canvas, 86 x 125 cm (Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest)

In the Book of Judges, as the Canaanites menace the Israelites, the female prophet and military leader Deborah predicts that a woman will destroy the evil Canaanite warlord Sisera.

The Israelite armies under Deborah’s command pushed Sisera into retreat. As he flees, Jael invites him into her husband’s tent to get refreshments and sleep. She then nails his head into the ground with a tent spike.

According to other accounts, Sisera is a monstrous giant, whereas Jael variously lulls him into submission with her beauty and charm. Jael jams the spike through his head while Sisera is apparently awake and standing up, or has sex with him until he’s too exhausted to fight back and then drives the spike through his head.
