Fine art photography in the studio – Inspired by the portrait of a man and a woman by Robert Campin

Fine art portraits of a man in studio

Models and actors on a personal project

The original article was written when Zoom Studio was named Aguiar Photography.

Inspired by famous fine art paintings, these photographs were taken within the studio as part of a series. I love European paintings, and this project was a technical exercise to experience at least some of the magic from the original work within the studio.

Robert Campin (1378/9 – 1444)

Portraits if a Man and a Woman, 1430-5

Oil, with some tempera, on oak, each portrait 41 x 28 cm (The National Gallery – London 653.1-2)

These portraits are believed to be painted by Robert Campin. The Portrait of a man and a woman were created as an individual, yet double portrait of a husband and wife.

The individual painting of the woman was crafted in soft textures, depicting a slight smile on her lips. Her hands are delicately placed on her lap with a small glance of a ring on her finger. As a double, the woman is facing in the direction of her husband as he faces her.

From the photographic result, the textures from the woman’s clothing and skin tones are replicated from the painting. Her smile and delicate position also reflect the original artwork’s composure. The photograph of the husband corresponds to these traits to reflect the double portrait.
