Large reflective products photography on client's location

We decided to do this job on the client's warehouse because of the large number of products and its sizes. We transported our studio lights and reflectors including the computer and large monitor to inspect and select the photos with the client.   

It was a very busy day and thanks to the warehouse support team that unpacked, cleaned and moved the items around, we managed to photograph all that was planned.

Large items with large reflective areas are difficult to photograph for many reasons. The amount of light on one area of the product needs to be balanced with the other one. The reflections need to exist but cannot be too strong or with a shape that distracts from the product itself. 

We used 5 or 6 studio flashes and large diffusers. We used large whiteboards to control the top and front reflections. 

We connected the camera into a computer and a large screen (Tethering shooting) to be sure that we have done all photos required. It gives the client and us confidence that we have the images we need.

This is a job from last year but did not have time to publish before.

We photographed these fantastic cubby houses inside the client's warehouse. It was a full day shooting to photograph all models with all accessories in a couple of angles.

We carried 5 or 6 studio flashes and multiple backgrounds and reflectors to be able to properly spread the light on all places required.

In order to be sure that we have done all photos required, we connected the camera into a computer and a large screen. 

It was great to photograph these products. A big thank you for the warehouse support team that installed and removed many accessories during the day.

I love lifestyle photos and, if it has a baby, it is even better.

This product is a baby pillow that is shaped to prevent the baby head to get flat. It is done with natural latex and it is very soft and nice.

Amazon requires the advertisers to use a photo on a white background as the main photo and does not allow any ad-on text or props.  This client has a few photos that comply with Amazon requirements for the main photo. This was important because the client could compare the performance of the different main photo and see which one gets more clicks. 

I believe that each photo needs to tell a message and a single and clear message. It can be "see my shape" or "see how soft I am" or "see how your baby will feel".  I think we achieved this here.

Lifestyle advertising photos are the best way to show product features.

When we get a product to photograph, we start by ask all we can about the product. We want to know what is made of, how it is used, the main features and why they are special.

Some products such as this one, we already know what a table cloth is and what is it used for but there is always something special in each product, regardless of how common it is.

This table cloth is made of a mix of cotton and linen and the colors are just calm and natural. The texture, nice colours and natural fibres give it a modern, natural look.  

Most of the clients that sell on Amazon, Ebay, Catch-of-the-day and other sites need top quality photos to differentiate their products. They need something that makes the client to click on their product when multiple products thumbnails are side-by-side. We decided to contrast the calming blue colours with the exciting red cup to give it a nice "click-in-me".

Note that in all photos we tried to enhasize the colours and texture of the fabric and all the props are placed to help without competing to attention.

One super-efficient way of advertising your product is to show it in use. This product is demonstrated in fairs and shops all around Australia. It has a great capacity to absorb liquids and this is its main feature and what we were trying to capture here.

When the client contacted me and we were planning the studio photo session, he said that he had selected me because of the way I photograph black products. This is something interesting. He said that I show well the dark areas in black products. 

I really pay a lot of attention on how much details I should show on the shadow’s areas, regardless of the colour of the product. When the product is black, I need to show it is black and black products have dark shadows as well. How much black the product really is?

Our vision and our mind play tricks on us. When we see a white object, we think it is white but most times it is just a very light grey. The same happens with black objects. When we place a very white and a very black objects side by side, we increase our perception of how black the black is and how white the white is.

The cameras cannot capture all the dynamic range of colours and brightness we can "see" with our eyes and mind. So, selecting the amount of dark grey that looks like the dark grey of the product is super important. This requires a precise measure of the incident light.

I am very proud of the results of this project and will explain some of the reasons here.

When the client told me about the product over the phone, I did not imagined how cool and how challenging it would be to photograph.

In addition of been a transparent product, the skull globe decanter has a shape that reflects everything around it. I had to show the glass quality and texture of the timber frame as well. 

It took me a bit of time to get the correct exposure balance for highlight and dark areas to get the best colour for the timber frame and wiskey and I think the results are quite good.

I am very happy with all the equipment and lights we have in the studio. I could move the reflectors, windows and blockers around to create only the reflections we want.

Commercial and advertising photos of an iconic local club

Wantirna Club is located in Wantirna South and it is an iconic business. A place that all locals know and is a great place to have a drink, have dinner or lunch with family and friends. They also have rooms for hire for parties and business events.

This was a big job. It took us 4 days of shooting to get all we needed.

We photographed 7 internal areas, the external areas of the building and lifestyle photos using clients and models.

The clients helped a lot with the models and checking and selecting the photos. I photographed with the camera connected to an iPad so the client and my assistant had access to the photo seconds after the click. We used the iPad to select and adjust items, angles and lighting to get the results we want.

In order to reduce the amount of time and to disturb less the normal activities of the club, we had two sets of lights ready at any time. While we were working on a room, we had the next room partially prepared. We only used battery-powered studio flashes to be able to move them around fast.

Argan oil and cleansing cream by Clio & Clea – Cosmetic photography for advertising

The client is introducing to Australia two new products and we had the privilege to photograph them. The pure argan oil can be used for the body, face and hair. The cleansing cream is designed to remove pollutants, excess oils and makeup of the face.

We invited the experienced model Kiara Green for the project. We wanted to show the colour and texture of the product as well as where and how it can be used.

White background photography and lifestyle. Are they both important?

White background photography. We all need it.

The client is selling this product on Amazon US and Amazon Australia. It is a great product and I have used it on my last trip. Good size, soft fabric and light.

Amazon allows only a very limited number of photos, so the client decided to purchase one lifestyle photo and invest more on the photos with white background.

The photos with a white background or that have had their background removed, are great to show the product without any distraction. We use them to specify what is included in the purchase as in the case of the main photo (top of page) where it shows the bag, ear plugs and eye mask. It is also the best way to show the size of the product as you can see in this photo.

 

 

Lifestyle photography. Why do they work?

This lifestyle photography was selected by the client. It shows very well how the product fits in a person. It also introduces the idea that the product can be used at home when relaxing and reading a book.

These lifestyle photos show a clear connection of the product with the activities related to travelling. It shows how the product can be carried and be part of the action.

These two lifestyle photos were done inside a car showing the use of the product during car trips.

It was a cold and raining afternoon as it is typical of a Melbourne winter. We want to create an early afternoon scene and a night scene. I positioned the flashes in a way to create the lighting as if coming from the internal car light. To create the night effect I used the high speed on the camera and flashes to overpower the sun. We left the windows wet as it gave us nice reflections.

Advertising product photography for website

The client brought a series of cleaning and protection products they sell for labs and clinics. These products are very functional and our challenge was to show their features, materials texture, quality and size.

The first set of products were gloves of multiple materials and colour. Each type of glove has its use and characteristics. We selected a hand's position that is interesting without been awkward or ugly while still shows their filling and thickness. We included a few closeups to show the special texture on the finger tips. 

The cleaning cloths come out quite nice with the texture of the fabric.

The plastic bags for biological material are very interesting. Some are thick and strong, others transparent and strong. All are very large capacity and sometimes reflect more light that a photographer would like. Haha.

Forever Sharp Knifes – Product photography for website

Professional Product Photos for websites, catalogues and point-of-sale.

The professional photographer explains the difficulties in photographing reflective products.

These knives are special. They are super sharp and they keep sharp regardless of what you do with them. They are amazing but this job was special to me for a much more personal level.

The knives are special because they showed me how challenging product photography can be and how good is my studio lighting technique is.

When I was contacted by the client to photograph the knives, I had estimated that it would be a "medium" difficulty product due to its reflections. I have photographed several metal and reflective items and was not expecting this product to be harder than the ones I photographed before. 

Soon after I positioned the lights and took the first testing shots, I noticed the product was much harder to photograph than I anticipated. The size of each knife and its curves, engravings, sharp edges and grooves made me keep moving and repositioning lights for a few hours.

When I finally adjusted everything for one knife, I had to do it again for the next one. The sizes and the angles are unique in each one and even a small angle change affected the final result.

Despite the difficulty of the product, It did not took me too long to find solutions for each issue. I got surprised by how fast I found in my head a solution and how many times it worked well within only a few fine adjustments.  It was a very good feeling to know how natural and fast I retrieved the knowledge of these years of professional photography work in the studio.

 

This product and this job is special for still another reason. The client was with me in the studio and told me the sales person demonstrates the qualities of the knife by using it on a hammer head and after to cut a tomato. It shows that the knife never loses its sharpness.

We replicated this demo in the studio and you can see the results here.

I liked so much one of the photos from this demo that entered it on a the AIPP Australian Professional Photography Awards. It received a Silver Award in the commercial category.

Professional Amazon product photographer explains how he created a beach scene in the studio during winter in Melbourne

Product photography lifestyle in Studio

What an interesting product! It is a large floating bean bag with the Australian Flag.

In addition to super sharp and nice product photos, this job also required some clever photos showing the product in-use. It is used as a floating bed on swimming pools and beaches but can also be used inside the house as a comfortable bean bed to watch tv. We captured it all inside our warm studio in Wantirna South in Melbourne. 

We could have taken the product and the model to a beach but, in Melbourne during winter, it is quite cold and wet. We decided to photograph it in our studio.  

To get the beach look, we got a pack of New Zealand river sand that is nice and clean and asked the professional model Georgia to help us. A bit of water and some creative posing and angles and the job was done.

For the beach scene, I included a beach photo from one of my trips to Brazil to be on the background.

This was the first time I used styrofoam beans. They fly everywhere and are very light.

We used 6 bean bags of 500gm to fill the bed and It takes quite some time to transfer all beans. They do not fall as fast as I imagined.

I used a light stand to hold the bags in place. It helped a bit but at the end, there were beans everywhere. Haha.

This product is great to prepare merengues, pancakes and whipped cream. It only needs you to move it up and down.

It has some gear inside the head that makes the blades to run when you move the handle up and down. Simple, very clever and performs very well.

For this client, we created a series of photos showing the smaller and larger versions of the product in their totality, on multiple angles and some close-ups of the most important parts.

These are known as white background photography and e-commerce photography. We photograph the product using a single colour background that is often white. Using Photoshop, we manually mark the edges of the product with a pen and cut the product from the background. For some complex shapped products, this may take a couple of hours to do it well. The final result is a background that does not exist or it can take any colour or shape. In most cases, we use a perfect white as the background. 

In addition to the white-background photos, we created a few photos showing the power of the "blades" in movement.

Wow! What an intensive day in the studio and lots of fun.

The team from www.barkleyeyewear.com is releasing a series of classes with special lenses.

These lenses protect the eyes from the blue lights emitted by computer screens and indoor lights.

These products were designed here in Melbourne  and will and be first released in Amazon US.

They have many clever features including the smart clip-on for changing lenses.

Client participation:

It was a pleasure to have the team from Barkley Eyewear in the studio.

We at Zoom studio love to have the clients during the studio session.

We work together on the styling, photography angles, lighting and even on the definition of the number of photos required and their composition.

The client and I see the photos seconds after the click in a large colour calibrated monitor. We can check all details and change whatever necessary until it gets just perfect.

 

Product styling and objectives:

The style of a product photo needs to help to achieve the business objective.

The business requirement, in this case, was to shows "what is in the box" in a pleasant modern way.

We decided to use a lay-flat style so, all items are placed side-by-side. This style allows us to see all products without overlays or one product in front of the other and without perspective effects.

It is a great solution for showing the size of each product. We used a side soft light to show the texture of the surfaces such as the leather case and the fabric case.

Hero image:

This is my favourite photo of the session for many reasons.

It isolates the main product without showing accessories that could distract from the main product.

It shows clearly the quality of the product, the shape of the frame, the colour of the lenses and is a very pleasant dynamic composition.

The image is modern, shows the very well the product, quality and the main feature (lenses and colours).

 

 

Lifestyle image:

A lifestyle image should present the product well and create an association of the product with a place, use or client demographic.

In our case, the product is super necessary for people that spend hours in front of a computer screen. This is the main message. If you use a computer, you need this product.

The placement of the product on a relaxing, casual way over a computer keyboard gives the image a young modern look. 

The selection of a quality-brand notebook expands the perception of quality by association and may be particularly effective on students, young mobile professionals and creative artists.

 

 

Explaining features:

Someone said that one image is worth thousands of words. It is really true but there are things that are better explained using words.

In this case, we need to explain to the clients the use of the different lenses, their benefits and uses.

The solution was to photograph the products with each lens and combine them in a single image with a short text explaining it all.

What makes a good Amazon product photography?

In addition to complying with Amazon image requirements, the images should show the following:

1 - Physical characteristics of the product such as size and volume.

2 - Advantages such as ease of use, durability, washability or anything that is relevant and advantage of the product.

3 - Show the product in-use or a lifestyle photo where the client can identify themselves with the product.

It is important to note that one image should send one and only one clear message. If the image is to show a feature of the product, it should be a closeup of the part of the product where we can see the feature and nothing more.   

The image on the top of this article is the main image of this product that is a set of 7 food containers. It shows the products with typical food items, has reflections to illustrate the transparency of plastic and shows how they can be piled together fitting nicely in a shelf.

As per Amazon's image requirements, this first image has no background. In fact, the background is shown here as a perfect white (RGB 255,255,255).

 

Composite image.

This image is a composite of 4 individual photos that were photographed and retouched individually. You can click on any image to see it larger. .

Features of the group.

This photo was created leaving a good amount of empty space for text.

In this case, the client tells advantages such as durability, washability and the type of material used.

These advantages are not clear only by looking at the images so, the use of text was the best option.

The close-up action photo shows the easy opening of the lid.

The black space also known as negative space was used to add important information to the client.

In this case, the air-tight lid and that is the most durable on the market.
