Model portrait in the studio with Alyson - Portfolio for creative artists

Alyson is a great model and was a pleasure to work with.

We started with some corporate portrait poses that are going to be used as samples on the corporate headshots page and then moved to other more creative looks.

Alyson asked to have body shots showing her well-sculpured muscles. I believe a model's portfolios have to show a variety of looks and pose without repetitions. The images should show the model as she/he is. It is ok to use light and shadows to show volume and forms.

Andjela Matijas 4-Model Portfolio Photography

Model portrait in the studio with Andjela - Portfolio for creative artists

Every other year I run a few testing shot sessions with models and actors. I use sessions to try a few new looks and to refresh the sample pages on the site.

This time I had Andjela Matijas in the studio. She is a very talented young model and very comfortable in front of the camera. It was a pleasure to photograph her.

In this session, we started with some corporate portrait poses that are going to be used as samples on the corporate headshots page and then moved to other more creative looks.

Andjela asked to have some colourful portraits and I loved the idea. I had photographed other models using multiple colour gels at the same time as you can see on this link. This time I decided to prevent the colours from reaching the model's face and the use of a single colour in each portrait. I think the results are perhaps less artistic but better as photos for a model's portfolio.

jonathan Simpson actor professional profile showiing a half smile as if a very friendly person

Actor portfolio studio session with Jonathan Simpson - Talent portfolio

Creative portrait studio session for

Jonathan Simpson

What is important in a model portfolio

Jonathan Simpson - Model, Actor, Writer, Director and TV Presenter

Jonathan is a very nice an friendly person and it was a pleasure photographing him. He is 23 years old and graduated with a bachelor of Creative Arts (Drama) in 2016. After two years of working in the USA, he is back in Melbourne and decided to update his professional profile.

My suggestions for actors and models professional profile.

During the professional life of an actor, dancer, model, musician and many others talented people, they find opportunities to keep a few photos that are good for their professional portfolio but I believe they should not be the core of the profile. I will explain why here.

The casting agent when looking for a model or an actor, he or she wants to have fresh images of the person with the minimum amount of makeup or special effects. A good profile will show at least one full body image and a few headshots, preferably with a variety of expressions.

If you are a model, you may need to show more of your body, so you can get jobs that require your body characteristics. Your skin, hands, ears, nose, lips, back, legs, arms and abdomen are all important to be well presented. I would still suggest having a good variety of expressions but it is your body that matters most, in most cases. So, if you select to wear too loose clothes, regardless of how nice it is, it will hide your body form.

If you are an actor, the same applies but in many cases, your physical characteristics are not as important as your expressions and of course your acting experience.

If you have any special skills such as a dancer or an instrument player or a singer, you may add one or two photos showing that skill.

Now, talking about the number of images you need in your professional profile. You have to have as many as necessary to show what you need to show and nothing more.

What I mean is if you have one fresh headshot with a good smile, you do not need to have another. It does not help you to have many portraits showing the same expression. It does not help in having two versions of the same image, one in black and white and another in colour.

If you include any phone photo was taken when you were acting or modelling or any behind-the-scenes, it may help if you include the name of the show or film. If it is a very nice photo and from a nice production, it may help. If not, the impact is not very relevant. In any case, only include your top 3 or 4 behind-the-scenes photos. Your acting experience is in the text where you can tell all the relevant details. You do not need to prove your experience in your portfolio.

Note the variety of expressions and poses and lighting and backgrounds in a single studio session.

Portraits of actresses Sandra, Katya and Siobahn - Talent profile photos

It is a pleasure to introduce 3 great actresses that were photographed in our studio recently. In this post, I will talk a bit about the selection of photos for a professional portfolio.

It is very common that a casting agent looks at thousand of photos before shortlisting a talent. They know they want a person with specific characteristics such as age, sex and size.  They also know that the person would need to have a "nice friendly smile" or a "young and sexy look" or "nice long legs".

Talent websites and agent management sites are quite good in filtering and selecting people based on their metadata (sizes, age, sex, the colour of hair, etc) but these are almost useless to find "nice long legs" or a friendly smile.

When I have portrait sessions with actors and actresses I try to capture images that will help a casting agent to select the person. I try to capture multiple expressions and poses to create the biggest variety of options for selection.

Headshots for models and actors are different from traditional corporate portraits. On a professional corporate portrait, we are not "selling"  the person physical characteristics but how the person looks to us. We want to show a friendly, confident, authoritative and approachable person. We want to see the image of a person we would like to meet and work with. A team player.

On portraits of actors and models, we want to sell their physical characteristics and expressions. We want to create a variety of looks and backgrounds and each one showing one or more of their physical features.

The creation of multiple looks is important to simulate more than one studio session in one. We do this by changing the lights and backgrounds. It gives the perception of a more professional experienced actor and how they perform under multiple lighting conditions and camera angles.

In these standard 1-hour studio session portraits of Josh Blake and Laurence Corneschi, you will see multiple backgrounds, looks and clothes.

Portrait of model and actres Anne Fulton 5

Portraits of models and actresses Anne, Chloe and Kubra- Talent profile photos

The original article was written when the business was named Aguiar Photography.

This month we had a lot of portraits and we loved them all.

This is what happens in a portrait session with us:

Each session takes around one hour. We talk a bit about the clothes, hair, accessories and take the first series of photos. While we are photographing, the camera sends the images to the main computer. When we have already done a few images, we go to the large screen and select the ones we like more.

we mark the photos we like and if we believe we can improve, we return to the studio and improve from the previous poses and expressions. It is a very efficient way to get the expressions how we want. We look for expressions that send the right message (confidence, approachable, experienced, friendly).

Some people take a bit longer to relax and give me the expression required for each type of portrait session. Our portrait sessions are planned and executed to give each client his/her best set of images for their purpose. We take into consideration more than just their profession but also what other photos they may already have, which message they want to pass, how they want to be seen.

Well, I would like to share with you these portraits of these great professional models and actresses, Anne Fulton, Chloe Towan and Kubra Elyas.

Corporate Headshot for Raine Horne Real Estate

Corporate headshots on-location for Raine & Horne Real Estate

Raine & Horne requested us to take some corporate headshots of the team in the office. They wanted to take the opportunity of a weekly team meeting to get everyone photographed at the same time. The option we selected was to take our portable studio equipment to their office.

Their office is very nice but does not have a large room and photographing in a small room can pose some difficulties. The first problem is the distance of the subject to the camera. When this distance is too short, the person's perspective may become distorted (wide-angle lens effect).

The other problem happens when the subject is too close to the background. In this case, their shadow falls on the background creating a very distracting image.

In our portable studio set, we have a collapsible background that can be illuminated from the back.  This way we can have the person very close to the background and their shadow disappears due to the illuminated background. This also eliminates any distortion associated with having the person too close to the camera.

Check out our corporate photography page for more samples and see the background in use.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that the Raine & Horne Caroline Springs team is very friendly and a pleasure to work with.

I have Jose's services twice so far. The first time was to get some professional pictures taken for my career and social media. I was very impressed both with the quality of the pictures and Jose's professionalism. I booked his services again to do a few family pictures. The results was outstanding and my family loved it. Jose is very easy to work with, full of great ideas and shows real instinct in getting very creative results. Highly recommend him and I will use his services again.

We went to Zoom Studio in April this year to take a headshot for job applications. Had a great experience - Jose really took the time to understand what we needed from the photo, and spent a lot of time providing advice about how to pose and look the part of the job for which I am applying. He took a genuine interest in it and treated this as more than simply a job, providing lots of advice to help make the photo perfect. The photo looks absolutely fantastic. He provided a high resolution copy and a lower resolution one for uploading to websites etc. He also spent a lot of time touching up the photo and removing any unsightly spots. Very happy with the experience and the photo. All of this at a very reasonable price - we will certainly be back the next time we need a photo!
