Model portrait in the studio with Alyson - Portfolio for creative artists

Alyson is a great model and was a pleasure to work with.

We started with some corporate portrait poses that are going to be used as samples on the corporate headshots page and then moved to other more creative looks.

Alyson asked to have body shots showing her well-sculpured muscles. I believe a model's portfolios have to show a variety of looks and pose without repetitions. The images should show the model as she/he is. It is ok to use light and shadows to show volume and forms.

Model portrait in the studio with Andjela - Portfolio for creative artists

Every other year I run a few testing shot sessions with models and actors. I use sessions to try a few new looks and to refresh the sample pages on the site.

This time I had Andjela Matijas in the studio. She is a very talented young model and very comfortable in front of the camera. It was a pleasure to photograph her.

In this session, we started with some corporate portrait poses that are going to be used as samples on the corporate headshots page and then moved to other more creative looks.

Andjela asked to have some colourful portraits and I loved the idea. I had photographed other models using multiple colour gels at the same time as you can see on this link. This time I decided to prevent the colours from reaching the model's face and the use of a single colour in each portrait. I think the results are perhaps less artistic but better as photos for a model's portfolio.

Male model's portfolio build-up in studio

A professional model always need some fresh portraits

Male model portfolio sample 1.jpg

If you are a model or if you want to work as a model, you need a portfolio.

A good portfolio is more than a collection of old photos. It needs to be fresh or at least recent. It needs to have only good quality photos in a variety of poses.

We offer several portrait sessions packages for creative artists such as actors, models and musician. We have a 3-photo session package that is perfect to add fresh content and to fill-in missing poses and expressions.

A great portfolio, in my opinion, needs to show a variety of poses and expressions. The objective is to show to the casting agent, using only a few shots, you as you are.

In this article I am showing a few photos of Adytia and Paul. Note the variety of poses, expressions and background.

Please leave your comment. Thanks.

Actor portfolio studio session with Jonathan Simpson - Talent portfolio

Creative portrait studio session for

Jonathan Simpson

What is important in a model portfolio

Jonathan Simpson - Model, Actor, Writer, Director and TV Presenter

Jonathan is a very nice an friendly person and it was a pleasure photographing him. He is 23 years old and graduated with a bachelor of Creative Arts (Drama) in 2016. After two years of working in the USA, he is back in Melbourne and decided to update his professional profile.

My suggestions for actors and models professional profile.

During the professional life of an actor, dancer, model, musician and many others talented people, they find opportunities to keep a few photos that are good for their professional portfolio but I believe they should not be the core of the profile. I will explain why here.

The casting agent when looking for a model or an actor, he or she wants to have fresh images of the person with the minimum amount of makeup or special effects. A good profile will show at least one full body image and a few headshots, preferably with a variety of expressions.

If you are a model, you may need to show more of your body, so you can get jobs that require your body characteristics. Your skin, hands, ears, nose, lips, back, legs, arms and abdomen are all important to be well presented. I would still suggest having a good variety of expressions but it is your body that matters most, in most cases. So, if you select to wear too loose clothes, regardless of how nice it is, it will hide your body form.

If you are an actor, the same applies but in many cases, your physical characteristics are not as important as your expressions and of course your acting experience.

If you have any special skills such as a dancer or an instrument player or a singer, you may add one or two photos showing that skill.

Now, talking about the number of images you need in your professional profile. You have to have as many as necessary to show what you need to show and nothing more.

What I mean is if you have one fresh headshot with a good smile, you do not need to have another. It does not help you to have many portraits showing the same expression. It does not help in having two versions of the same image, one in black and white and another in colour.

If you include any phone photo was taken when you were acting or modelling or any behind-the-scenes, it may help if you include the name of the show or film. If it is a very nice photo and from a nice production, it may help. If not, the impact is not very relevant. In any case, only include your top 3 or 4 behind-the-scenes photos. Your acting experience is in the text where you can tell all the relevant details. You do not need to prove your experience in your portfolio.

Note the variety of expressions and poses and lighting and backgrounds in a single studio session.

Emotions Project - Jose Aguiar personal photography project

Emotions project is one of my personal projects. The objective is to portrait a variety of human emotions where the images cause emotions on who sees them.

In addition to exploring and photographing emotions, I want to bring aspects of our society into discussions. Here I am showing Bridget's joy of playing and on one of the aspects of domestic violence.

To show the joy of living and playing, Bridget got wet playing with water balloons. It was a lot of fun trying to get the balloons to "hit the target"

Bridget also contributed to emotions of shame and pain. This second image is part of a collection of domestic violence. Bridget shows signs of physical abuse that may not be seen by others. Domestic violence happens in many ways and the victims often hide from everybody but themselves.

We have here images of other emotions such as depression, age, sickness, sexual abuse and a series of expressions from the actress Meerna.

I hope you feel something with these images, comment and share.

Thanks

Jose Aguiar

Environment portrait of John and his powerful Mighty Mo

Portraits of a man and his nice car and motorcycle.

Original article was written when Zoom Studio was named Aguiar Photography.

Have you heard about Might Mo? No? Well, so you probably know about the World War II, right?

So, the USS Missouri (BB-63) a.k.a Mighty Mo" or "Big Mo" is a United States Navy Iowa-class battleship and was the third ship of the U.S. Navy to be named after of the U.S. state of Missouri. She was the last battleship commissioned by the United States and was best remembered as the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan which ended World War II. On 14 October 2009, Mighty Mo was moved from her berthing station on Battleship Row to a dockyard at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.

Which brings us here to our friend John Pattison. It all began with a visit to Hawai and Pearl Harbour last year, when he decided to honor this incredible ship by naming his brand new car.

John is also an experienced rider and his love for speed doesn't stop at the Mustang.  He also has a Harley Davidson and has ridden with his friend Dave a few years ago all across Australia.

It was a warm and nice afternoon and a pleasure to photograph these American power idols.

Model under colourful lights - model profile 7

Model Hannah colourful profile photos - Model photography

Model under colourful lights - model profile 4

Portrait photos for a model's profile and portfolio. Disco/colourful lights and high-contract portraits.

I photographed Hannah Conn, actress and model in our studio under colourful lights.

It was a great pleasure to work with Hannah. She is a model and actress and is currently studying cinema and working on public events.

Hannah helped me in filming and editing a small video that will be released in a few weeks.

This was Hannah's idea of the use of colour lights. There is nothing difficult in placing colour gels in front of the flashes. The difficult part is not to overdo it. The placement of each light is critical in creating distinctive colour areas and where multiple colours can affect the same area.

Another challenge is with skin and fabric texture that may become too strong due to the placement of lights on near 90-degree angles.

In order to give Hannah a varied portfolio, I changed the lighting and the retouching to produce multiple looks. All photos were done in our studio in Wantirna South.

Have a look at the result and leave your comments here.

Actors and models headshots in studio

I would like to introduce Sunny Walia, Steven James and Joseph Gagaridis. They were photographed in one of our creative portraits sessions last month.

It was so easy to photograph this group of talented actors and models! A pleasant and friendly group indeed.

Our objective was to create a variety of headshots for their professional profile pages.

Enjoy and have a good day!

Portrait of actress Siobhan Heenan 1 (2)

Portraits of actresses Sandra, Katya and Siobahn - Talent profile photos

It is a pleasure to introduce 3 great actresses that were photographed in our studio recently. In this post, I will talk a bit about the selection of photos for a professional portfolio.

It is very common that a casting agent looks at thousand of photos before shortlisting a talent. They know they want a person with specific characteristics such as age, sex and size.  They also know that the person would need to have a "nice friendly smile" or a "young and sexy look" or "nice long legs".

Talent websites and agent management sites are quite good in filtering and selecting people based on their metadata (sizes, age, sex, the colour of hair, etc) but these are almost useless to find "nice long legs" or a friendly smile.

When I have portrait sessions with actors and actresses I try to capture images that will help a casting agent to select the person. I try to capture multiple expressions and poses to create the biggest variety of options for selection.

Portrait of actor Laurence Corneschi 3

Portraits of actors Laurence and Josh - ActorsTalent profile photos

Headshots for models and actors are different from traditional corporate portraits. On a professional corporate portrait, we are not "selling"  the person physical characteristics but how the person looks to us. We want to show a friendly, confident, authoritative and approachable person. We want to see the image of a person we would like to meet and work with. A team player.

On portraits of actors and models, we want to sell their physical characteristics and expressions. We want to create a variety of looks and backgrounds and each one showing one or more of their physical features.

The creation of multiple looks is important to simulate more than one studio session in one. We do this by changing the lights and backgrounds. It gives the perception of a more professional experienced actor and how they perform under multiple lighting conditions and camera angles.

In these standard 1-hour studio session portraits of Josh Blake and Laurence Corneschi, you will see multiple backgrounds, looks and clothes.

Portrait of model and actres Anne Fulton 5

Portraits of models and actresses Anne, Chloe and Kubra- Talent profile photos

The original article was written when the business was named Aguiar Photography.

This month we had a lot of portraits and we loved them all.

This is what happens in a portrait session with us:

Each session takes around one hour. We talk a bit about the clothes, hair, accessories and take the first series of photos. While we are photographing, the camera sends the images to the main computer. When we have already done a few images, we go to the large screen and select the ones we like more.

we mark the photos we like and if we believe we can improve, we return to the studio and improve from the previous poses and expressions. It is a very efficient way to get the expressions how we want. We look for expressions that send the right message (confidence, approachable, experienced, friendly).

Some people take a bit longer to relax and give me the expression required for each type of portrait session. Our portrait sessions are planned and executed to give each client his/her best set of images for their purpose. We take into consideration more than just their profession but also what other photos they may already have, which message they want to pass, how they want to be seen.

Well, I would like to share with you these portraits of these great professional models and actresses, Anne Fulton, Chloe Towan and Kubra Elyas.

Corporate Headshot for Raine Horne Real Estate

Corporate headshots on-location for Raine & Horne Real Estate

Raine & Horne requested us to take some corporate headshots of the team in the office. They wanted to take the opportunity of a weekly team meeting to get everyone photographed at the same time. The option we selected was to take our portable studio equipment to their office.

Their office is very nice but does not have a large room and photographing in a small room can pose some difficulties. The first problem is the distance of the subject to the camera. When this distance is too short, the person's perspective may become distorted (wide-angle lens effect).

The other problem happens when the subject is too close to the background. In this case, their shadow falls on the background creating a very distracting image.

In our portable studio set, we have a collapsible background that can be illuminated from the back.  This way we can have the person very close to the background and their shadow disappears due to the illuminated background. This also eliminates any distortion associated with having the person too close to the camera.

Check out our corporate photography page for more samples and see the background in use.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that the Raine & Horne Caroline Springs team is very friendly and a pleasure to work with.

We went to Zoom Studio in April this year to take a headshot for job applications. Had a great experience - Jose really took the time to understand what we needed … read more from the photo, and spent a lot of time providing advice about how to pose and look the part of the job for which I am applying. He took a genuine interest in it and treated this as more than simply a job, providing lots of advice to help make the photo perfect. The photo looks absolutely fantastic. He provided a high resolution copy and a lower resolution one for uploading to websites etc. He also spent a lot of time touching up the photo and removing any unsightly spots. Very happy with the experience and the photo. All of this at a very reasonable price - we will certainly be back the next time we need a photo!
