Amazon product photography of an acupressure mat and pillow

What an interesting product it is! A mat and pillow to use for relaxing after yoga or other exercises or to reduce stress, meditate or simply relaxation. 

It is made of natural coconut fibres, linen and cotton. Have a look at this picture of the fibres. I carefully placed the light to show the texture of the materials.

Jose Aguiar photographed the product in our studio in Wantirna South using the professional model Latonya Wigginton. She is a great model, super fit and flexible. The client followed parts of the session via a video call.

You will find here a series of close-ups of the flowers, the mat and its uses.

This project was well planned with the client and the photos show well the product's quality. 

When the advertising photo is good, you do not need text to explain it. I think each of these photos has a clear message and the collection tells well the story of the product.

Amazon product photography of one-gallon drinking bottle

This is a very nice water bottle that fits one gallon (3.7 litres) of water but the part that I like best is the marks with the hours of the day. It helps you keep track of the amount of water you have had during the day.

I always try to have each product photo with a single and clear message. There are photos that tell you about the shape of the bottle, others about the large opening, others on how they are useful on different places and occasions. 

There are many lifestyle images on Amazon and other sites that include too much of the environment that they want to create. It creates distractions from the product. When you ask yourself "what is the photo about", and your answer does not start with "the product on...", you probably included too many elements. 

I prefer lifestyle photos that include only one or two props and backgrounds that indicate where the product is used. Every time we add a new element on the photo, we share the photo area with one more item and it reduces the power of the main product.

These photos are a good example of how we can show all features and a few nice uses of the product with quality and believability.

Sometimes the client has already a good number of photos and is selling well on Amazon, eBay, Catch and other on-line shops and may need only a few extra special photos to complete the set.

This was the case with this client. We worked on a nice clean main photo without props and a couple of main feature lifestyle photos.

The use of a small panda hiding inside the bag made the image extra special and fun.

This is a job from last year but we could not publish them until now. The client asked to keep them out of the site until their marketing activities produced the results they need. We have now received approval to show them.

This product is very well designed and of high quality and it was a great success when launched on Amazon.

It was great to photograph this product. It is not a simple product. It has reflections, textures and transparency areas. It has natural stones, stainless steel parts, paper, plastic, cloth and we had to balance it all. I am very proud of the results. Let me know what you think.

I love lifestyle photos and, if it has a baby, it is even better.

This product is a baby pillow that is shaped to prevent the baby head to get flat. It is done with natural latex and it is very soft and nice.

Amazon requires the advertisers to use a photo on a white background as the main photo and does not allow any ad-on text or props.  This client has a few photos that comply with Amazon requirements for the main photo. This was important because the client could compare the performance of the different main photo and see which one gets more clicks. 

I believe that each photo needs to tell a message and a single and clear message. It can be "see my shape" or "see how soft I am" or "see how your baby will feel".  I think we achieved this here.

Lifestyle photography for Amazon of a gift box of a wine cooler, poorer and stopper.

This was the second job for the same client and it is an great feeling when we have the client returning for more. 

This was an advertising photography job to be use on Amazon e-commerce. It was photographed in our studio in Melbourne by Jose Aguiar.

This product is very innovative. The stainless-steel tube you put on the fridge and when it is time for a cup of wine, you take it from the fridge and cups and ice cubes are great and the box is super cool and very well produced. 

There are many challenges when photographing transparent and reflective products and this one is reflective, round and needs to be inside a wine bottle. The balance between reflections and transparencies areas, shadows and highlights need to be real and nice. I think the results are quite good.   

We also had to show the quality of the box. The box is made of black paper with matt and low sheen area with engravings and writing.  

All the photos including the lifestyle ones were done in our studio in Wantirna South (Melbourne).

Lifestyle and white-background product photographed for Amazon e-commerce. Black product and complex shape.

When the client contacted me and we were planning the studio photo session, he said that he had selected me because of the way I photograph black products. This is something interesting. He said that I show well the dark areas in black products. 

I really pay a lot of attention on how much details I should show on the shadow’s areas, regardless of the colour of the product. When the product is black, I need to show it is black and black products have dark shadows as well. How much black the product really is?

Our vision and our mind play tricks on us. When we see a white object, we think it is white but most times it is just a very light grey. The same happens with black objects. When we place a very white and a very black objects side by side, we increase our perception of how black the black is and how white the white is.

The cameras cannot capture all the dynamic range of colours and brightness we can "see" with our eyes and mind. So, selecting the amount of dark grey that looks like the dark grey of the product is super important. This requires a precise measure of the incident light.

Well, I love technical aspects of my profession and how to apply them to the desired final image. I could keep writing about it a lot but, I will probably be too boring for most people. If you want to send me a question or a comment, please write at the bottom of this post.

Lifestyle and white-background product photographed for Amazon e-commerce. Reflective, transparent and multi-texture product.

I am very proud of the results of this project and will explain some of the reasons here.

When the client told me about the product over the phone, I did not imagined how cool and how challenging it would be to photograph.

In addition of been a transparent product, the skull globe decanter has a shape that reflects everything around it. I had to show the glass quality and texture of the timber frame as well. 

It took me a bit of time to get the correct exposure balance for highlight and dark areas to get the best colour for the timber frame and wiskey and I think the results are quite good.

I am very happy with all the equipment and lights we have in the studio. I could move the reflectors, windows and blockers around to create only the reflections we want.

This was an advertising photography job for a client to be use on Amazon e-commerce. It was photographed in our studio in Melbourne by the commercial photographer Jose Aguiar.

This product is very nice. The cups and ice cubes are great and the box is super cool and very well produced. 

All reflective products are difficult to photograph, mainly when they have the shape of cups and bottles as they reflect a large area. When we add the fact that we also need to show their transparency while controlling the reflections, the difficult escalates even more.

In addition to the reflections and transparencies, we also had to show the quality of the box. The box is made of black material with matt areas, low sheen areas engravings and writing. 

The lifestyle photos were also done in our studio in Melbourne and the client has provided us with this full of personality barrel.

I love to see clients that invest in quality products. I enjoyed the technical challenges and the result I think represents well the product's quality. I hope you like it.

See our underwater and beach photos all done in the studio during winter in Melbourne

Read how the photographer captured the product under the water and on a beach.

This is another product that is used outdoors and mainly in summer that we photographed in the studio simulating beach scenes. This product is in fact two products. One is a case where you can put your mobile and swim with it. You can even operate the mobile under the water. You can take pictures with your own mobile while all wet in a beach.

The second product is a bag that is also waterproof. It has 3 zip locks to prevent the water to go inside. It is great to put your documents, watch and money and take with you everywhere. I see this product selling a lot this summer.

For the underwater photo, I used my own mobile and an aquarium and a bit of blue dye. It was good fun to play with the water and bubbles. 

The beach photo was also done in the studio with a bit of sand and some shells. This is my favourite. It is warm and shows well that you can count on this product for protection and just have fun.

The professional model is Georgia. It was a pleasure to work with her. Very professional and friendly.  I do not know if she enjoyed the constant water droplets. I have made the studio as warm as I could to accommodate with the summer apparel.

To show how the product can be used, we started placing the bag as a belt around the belly but Georgia said that it was not fashionable. The girls will probably use it crossed. I think she was right. It looks better that way.  I love when people that participate in the project give their opinion. 

The lighting for Georgia's photos is a simulation of the sun at the end of the day. Side and warm.

Professional Amazon product photographer explains how he created a beach scene in the studio during winter in Melbourne

Product photography lifestyle in Studio

What an interesting product! It is a large floating bean bag with the Australian Flag.

In addition to super sharp and nice product photos, this job also required some clever photos showing the product in-use. It is used as a floating bed on swimming pools and beaches but can also be used inside the house as a comfortable bean bed to watch tv. We captured it all inside our warm studio in Wantirna South in Melbourne. 

We could have taken the product and the model to a beach but, in Melbourne during winter, it is quite cold and wet. We decided to photograph it in our studio.  

To get the beach look, we got a pack of New Zealand river sand that is nice and clean and asked the professional model Georgia to help us. A bit of water and some creative posing and angles and the job was done.

For the beach scene, I included a beach photo from one of my trips to Brazil to be on the background.

This was the first time I used styrofoam beans. They fly everywhere and are very light.

We used 6 bean bags of 500gm to fill the bed and It takes quite some time to transfer all beans. They do not fall as fast as I imagined.

I used a light stand to hold the bags in place. It helped a bit but at the end, there were beans everywhere. Haha.

Zoom Studio is a product photography studio in Melbourne but we receive products from all over Australia. This product came from the Northern Territory.

In addition to the product photos on white background, we also sourced all the props and styled the lifestyle photos.

These two products are interesting to photograph with their own technical challenges. The LED lights change colour and it takes precise lighting adjustments and camera exposure to capture both flash iluminated surfaces and the LED colours. That is not all, to capture the steam I had to position very precisely the light to create volume and background separation. I love the technical challenges because they keep me constantly improving and searching for the best solutions.

I think the final result is very good. The client was satisfied and sent us more products already.

Wow! What an intensive day in the studio and lots of fun.

The team from www.barkleyeyewear.com is releasing a series of classes with special lenses.

These lenses protect the eyes from the blue lights emitted by computer screens and indoor lights.

These products were designed here in Melbourne  and will and be first released in Amazon US.

They have many clever features including the smart clip-on for changing lenses.

Client participation:

It was a pleasure to have the team from Barkley Eyewear in the studio.

We at Zoom studio love to have the clients during the studio session.

We work together on the styling, photography angles, lighting and even on the definition of the number of photos required and their composition.

The client and I see the photos seconds after the click in a large colour calibrated monitor. We can check all details and change whatever necessary until it gets just perfect.

 

Product styling and objectives:

The style of a product photo needs to help to achieve the business objective.

The business requirement, in this case, was to shows "what is in the box" in a pleasant modern way.

We decided to use a lay-flat style so, all items are placed side-by-side. This style allows us to see all products without overlays or one product in front of the other and without perspective effects.

It is a great solution for showing the size of each product. We used a side soft light to show the texture of the surfaces such as the leather case and the fabric case.

Hero image:

This is my favourite photo of the session for many reasons.

It isolates the main product without showing accessories that could distract from the main product.

It shows clearly the quality of the product, the shape of the frame, the colour of the lenses and is a very pleasant dynamic composition.

The image is modern, shows the very well the product, quality and the main feature (lenses and colours).

 

 

Lifestyle image:

A lifestyle image should present the product well and create an association of the product with a place, use or client demographic.

In our case, the product is super necessary for people that spend hours in front of a computer screen. This is the main message. If you use a computer, you need this product.

The placement of the product on a relaxing, casual way over a computer keyboard gives the image a young modern look. 

The selection of a quality-brand notebook expands the perception of quality by association and may be particularly effective on students, young mobile professionals and creative artists.

 

 

Explaining features:

Someone said that one image is worth thousands of words. It is really true but there are things that are better explained using words.

In this case, we need to explain to the clients the use of the different lenses, their benefits and uses.

The solution was to photograph the products with each lens and combine them in a single image with a short text explaining it all.

What makes a good Amazon product photography?

In addition to complying with Amazon image requirements, the images should show the following:

1 - Physical characteristics of the product such as size and volume.

2 - Advantages such as ease of use, durability, washability or anything that is relevant and advantage of the product.

3 - Show the product in-use or a lifestyle photo where the client can identify themselves with the product.

It is important to note that one image should send one and only one clear message. If the image is to show a feature of the product, it should be a closeup of the part of the product where we can see the feature and nothing more.   

The image on the top of this article is the main image of this product that is a set of 7 food containers. It shows the products with typical food items, has reflections to illustrate the transparency of plastic and shows how they can be piled together fitting nicely in a shelf.

As per Amazon's image requirements, this first image has no background. In fact, the background is shown here as a perfect white (RGB 255,255,255).

 

Composite image.

This image is a composite of 4 individual photos that were photographed and retouched individually. You can click on any image to see it larger. .

Features of the group.

This photo was created leaving a good amount of empty space for text.

In this case, the client tells advantages such as durability, washability and the type of material used.

These advantages are not clear only by looking at the images so, the use of text was the best option. 

Close up of product feature.

The close-up action photo shows the easy opening of the lid.

The black space also known as negative space was used to add important information to the client.

In this case, the air-tight lid and that is the most durable on the market.

Photography of product in use.

A great example of a photo that tells the intended message.

The product is dishwasher safe.

The close-up shows the product wet as reinforcing the washability characteristics and durability.

There is no need to any further text.
